I was born in 1971 in Aichi Prefecture, a provincial city in Japan. Japan’s regional cities have developed in line with the rapid economic development of the post-war period. On my days off I have been photographing some of the regional cities near where I live.
I am a self-taught photographer. These days Japan’s regional cities are mostly left in the dust as if they have been forgotten. I like to take pictures of abandoned townscapes, buildings and vacant lots in cities. I can’t really explain why I like to photograph such things.
If I had to, I would say that something in me resonates with my subjects. It’s something that is neglected as a result of excessive economic supremacy, a landscape that many people turn a blind eye to in their daily lives. I find an inexplicable loneliness and beauty in such things, which makes me stop and release the shutter. I would be very happy if people who see my photos feel something and share my feelings.
